The Christmas cactus is an indoor plant that it blooms beautifully in winter. The flowers have an elegant shape and range from bright pink to red to pure white. Its stems are flat, fleshy and branched. With the word Schlumbergera it indicates the well-defined genus of the large family of the Cactaceae, it is therefore a plant succulent native to the humid forests of Central America, in fact it prefers particularly humid areas where it is not the sun that reigns but the shade. Although their natural habitat seems so far away, they fit and live perfectly in our city apartments.
Thanks to its hanging branches and beautiful flowers it is very popular in hanging pots. It is also called Zygocactus referred to as Cultivar belonging to the Buckleyi group.
FLOWERING
Its flowering is exciting and very showy thanks to the difference between the internal and external tepals which I think an incredible effect making it look like a flower inside another flower.
It blooms between late autumn and winter with a abundant and very showy flowering.
It is possible to witness a spectacular flowering only when the Schlumbergera do not receive light for many hours a day and are guaranteed a maximum temperature of around 18 ° C. These are the conditions that allow abundant flowering that lasts for several weeks.
It is a plant very easy to grow in pots and that does not require special attention.
Small tricks will give a great result, in fact these are plants that require little space at the root level.
CARE
There are two precautions you must have in pot cultivation: have good quality soil and proper placement, both in regards exposure in the light both for air currents that could endanger the health of the plant.
Always keep the soil slightly moist, in Schlumbergera it prefers a bright spot, but away from the intense sun. Winter is her favorite season!
When you get home, plant the Christmas Cactus asap in a pot with holes in the bottom, so that the excess water can drain well or use a bowl where the irrigation water is collected inside. Spread a layer of hydro granules on the bottom of the vase, cover with fresh soil and place the root of the Christmas Cactus at the right depth, then fill with soil up to the edge of the pot and press firmly. Water well immediately after planting e place the pot in a warm, bright area, but not exposed to direct sunlight.
Keep the soil around the Christmas Cactus moderately moist and water when it is necessary using preferably rainwater.
The Christmas cactus start his lethargy in early August when the sprouts develop, in this period keep the plant in a bright but relatively dry and cool area when the sprouts are visible, move it to a warmer area. Every spring between March and April repot with fresh soil. From the end of May the plant can be kept outside, in the shade, by regularly adding fertilizer to the irrigation water.
CURIOSITY'
As mentioned, the main species grow in very shady areas, in particularly humid forests, therefore, a massive exposure to sunlight could "burn" the stems of plants that would take on a reddish color, which just does not identify a healthy plant.
Using the right precautions some species and varieties of Schlumbergera they can reach an age of 20 and over. A truly impressive achievement.
At every party its plant! In addition to the Christmas Cactus there is also the Easter Cactus, which unlike the first one blooms in the spring.
