THE WINTER BALCONY

THE WINTER BALCONY

December has arrived and with this last month of the year we want to give you some advice not to give up your green corner in the house, since you have taken care of it for the whole summer season, wouldn't you want to see it now bare and discolored due to the low temperatures?

The winter balcony can be absolutely fascinating and remind us that most plants go to rest but nature continues its life cycle by offering us plants and flowers that give their best in low temperatures.

The month of December is dedicated to Christmas and today we want to recommend a way to have your themed green corner.

There is a strong and cold-resistant plant that shines between the ice and the little light of this period.

Gaultheria procumbens, originally from North America which belongs to the family of the best known Erica. It has leaves of a very intense green with an oval cut and small white or pink flowers reminiscent of bluebells. The most fascinating part of this plant are undoubtedly the fruits: minute red berries that seem to have been born to decorate the house for Christmas.

This plant is very simple to grow in pots on balconies or windowsills to make your home perfectly Christmas themed using natural leaves and berries. And what could be better than smelling the decorations?

It is always exciting to return home in this period and find shapes and colors that recall the holidays. As always we love to use all our senses to live fully and give us the scent of leaves and real fruits is a gratification that has no equal. In addition, the leaves of this plant can be used for warm infusions with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

So what does the best ally need for our winter balcony?

Few and simple attentions will make it beautiful and luxuriant.

Rectangular boxes or medium-sized round pots are perfect.

An acidic, soft and well-drained soil will help you live healthy.

Take some soil and unique a good amount of sand and peat. Leave it where the sun does not beat directly but in this cold season one will be a problem and remember that if you position it near azaleas or rhododendrons it will be able to produce a greater quantity of berries.
