Dimorphotheca (Osteospermum/Dimorphotheca ecklonis), known as rain daisy or African daisy, is a herbaceous perennial native to South Africa, prized for its large, bright flowers reminiscent of classic daisies but with more intense, modern colors. It forms compact clumps about 30–50 cm tall, with dark green foliage and flowers that open in full sun from spring to autumn, creating a continuous and highly decorative effect.
It loves very bright locations: it blooms best in full sun, while on cloudy days or as the light fades, the flower heads tend to close, creating a curious natural "movement." It adapts well to all garden soils, but thrives in light, well-drained soils rich in organic matter, where the roots never remain waterlogged for long periods.
It's an ideal plant for those seeking color with little maintenance: it tolerates heat and short periods of drought well, requiring regular watering only in the hottest, driest months, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. By removing faded flowers and performing light containment pruning in late winter, the plant stays tidy, compact, and ready to bloom abundantly again season after season.
