The Prostrate Rosemary or Rosmarinus Officinalis Prostratus is an evergreen shrub with a creeping, ground cover and dense habit.

Origin: Southern Europe and Asia Minor.

Its main distinguishing feature is due to the aromatic, dense and narrow leaves. It blooms from March to May with blue-purplish flowers.

Care and growth:

Rosemary needs to be exposed to the sun or in partial shade. It also needs regular watering only in case of severe drought. The mild climate areas are the most suitable for its cultivation. Damage can occur due to the cold, in particular to the aerial part of the plant. Use slow release organic fertilizer, every two weeks from March to June, avoiding the moment of flowering. Mature manure is always very suitable for fertilization.

How to get a lush rosemary pillow in your garden?

rosemary plants need to be pruned to keep a nice compact appearance. Already the removal of a few twigs for kitchen uses is a "pruning" which for small plants may be sufficient. However, in the case of larger plants it will be necessary to do a real pruning. Generally the best time is the end of September. Proper pruning must shorten all young branches without ever cutting where they become woody. Rosemary, as well as the lavender plant, is one of those plants that does not put new shoots from lignified branches. So the cuts should not affect the parts of the branch that no longer have leaves because they will not push back. To have compact plants, pruning must be done already from the first year in order to shorten all the branches. If not pruned, the young branches, still flexible, will tend to open, to bend under their own weight, especially if it snows on them. In spring, however, they will have lignified and you will hardly be able to correct their shape.
