Description:
This bulbous perennial native to Asia is characterized by long, erect and rigid stems, whose height can even reach 100-150 cm. It then has alternate leaves that reach up to about one third of the height and which are pointed, arched, ribbon-like and of a dark and glossy green color. The enchanting flowers, large, bell-shaped and hanging, bloom in spring, exploding in a riot of bright and intense colors.
Care:
For a vigorous growth of Fritillaria imperialis plants it is advisable to plant them in a semi-shaded place, so that they receive a few hours of sun in the morning. They can show signs of suffering if placed in fully sunny places, especially during the summer period when temperatures are higher. The bulbs should be placed at a good distance from other plants, since they need a large space to develop at their best. From the end of February until the withering of the flowers, it is good to water the plants regularly, avoiding excesses and waiting for the soil to dry between one watering and the next. When the leaves begin to turn yellow, it is possible to drastically reduce watering, until the following year. The bulbs are to be planted at about 10-15 cm deep, in a rich, very well drained, soft and sandy soil and during the autumn season. Bulbs flower best when left undisturbed; they are planted in autumn, and sometimes they begin to flower from the second year after planting. After flowering, the imperial fritillaries produce long pods containing numerous fertile seeds, which are sown directly at home in late spring. If the sowing is done in the cold season, then, it will be appropriate to allow the rooting of the new specimens in a container placed in a protected place, to allow germination before placing them in the home.
OUR FRITILLARIA IMPERIALIS SELECTION: Fritillaria imperialis lutea: The flowers of this species are characterized by the intensity of the warm red, which makes the plant flamboyant and able to immediately capture the attention. Fritillaria imperialis rubra maxima: The flowers, with showy nectars at the base of the tepals, are of a warm yellow color, which recalls the golden color of the imperial crowns!
